to potter or not to potter - that is the question

Dear fellow bloggers - On Saturday morning I will be waiting for our good lady postie to deliver my new Harry Potter in the manner of a child waiting for Christmas. I love these books - the originality, the characters, the imagery, the twists. However I am aware of the massive controversy that surrounds these stories in Christian circles. How do you all feel about these wizarding stories? Are they modern classics just like Dahl and Kipling? Or do you think they're evil and should be discouraged among good christian folk? I am interested to know - feel free to be blunt and honest about your opinion.

PS - irritating that there is no sprll chick on blpg

Hmm interesting I have watched 2 of the films (which I thought were good) but have never read the books!

I think that to write about the things she writes about she must have some influences or just researched wizardry and witch craft very well..

Yet I get more concerned about the way Christians are seen and portrayed when they get their knickers in a twist about such things!! I think there are many more important issues to be concentrating on like the thousands effected by aids and other illnesses in Africa and other developing countries throughout the world, about the effects of natural disasters and wars that effect people daily then a book about a wizard, I just think that there are somethings that are more important.

Don't even get me started on my views of "Christian Voice" those people that got their knickers in a twist about the Jerry Springer show so much so that they were setting things on fire outside of the bbc building!! I mean what does that prove, it made my dad have more problems with Christians then he already had.... Grrrrr.....

Hmmmm I have more issues with Christians and there way of thinking sometimes then what I do with books and TV programmes that may not be "morally" right.

I think I got a little passionate about this one!

Well I read the books and they're the only books I enjoy readin! I don't think it's that much of a problem if you don't take it seriously

I much prefer books with a Christian influence, like Lord of the Rings, with characters that are Christ-like and self sacrifical - Gandalf for example. Hold on tho, isn't he a wizard? And aren't there lots of demon like creatures running around? Well, CS Lewis books are ok at least. The Lion, the WHAT and the wardrobe?? Maybe all the Christians shoud live in caves so they can't be influenced by the world at all!!!!!!!!! Or maybe we should worry more about showing God's love and compassion to the world than a few kids books!

Ok, you have chosen a subject that I feel quite strongly about so sorry if I offend anyone... It makes me mad that children all around the world love reading Harry Potter - why? Cos I know something that is more exciting...Jesus HELLO! - Ok, parting the sea, flooding the earth, raising people from the dead, giving me eternal life...the list is endless. I read the first book and I enjoyed it BUT hey I already know Jesus so nothing compares...what about all those children who don't. I know you could argue it's the same with any book - this is true except many children only started reading again cos of these books and I guess that also makes me a little sad.

I always think of HP the same way that I think of alcohol...all in moderation! I love reading the books, and the films are alright. And, as with alcohol, if you don't think you can handle it - keep away!!

"And as I re-read this blog for the 7th time, I slowly begin to realise that because of Harry Potter, Jen will not be blogging for a while"
